A Magento integration should begin with the business record that must stay correct. Connecting an API is only part of the work. Orders, customers, prices, and inventory need explicit ownership, reliable handoffs, and a way to resolve disagreement.
This guide is a MyNew Technologies planning framework for Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce projects. The example is illustrative, not a case study or a claim of achieved savings. Exact APIs, features, and authentication requirements depend on the deployed product and version.
Choose the system of record for each field
List the systems involved: commerce, ERP, CRM, fulfillment, payment, and reporting. Assign an owner for each important data element. A single record can have several owners at field level: commerce may originate an order while the ERP owns its accounting state and the fulfillment platform owns its shipping status.
| Data | Decision to document |
|---|---|
| Product and identifier | Who creates it, and which stable key is shared? |
| Price and eligibility | Which system applies customer-specific rules and when? |
| Inventory | What does available mean, and when is stock reserved? |
| Order status | Which states may each connected system change? |
| Customer details | Which changes propagate, and which data is unnecessary elsewhere? |
Map an entire transaction, including exceptions
Consider an illustrative B2B order. A customer submits a purchase order, commerce validates it, the ERP accepts it, and fulfillment schedules delivery. Document what the customer sees at each step. “Submitted” must not silently become “accepted” if downstream approval has not happened.
Include rejected SKUs, expired credentials, delayed responses, partial fulfillment, cancellations, and manual changes. Decide how an operator sees an exception and which system records its resolution.
Limit access to the required resources
Adobe’s web API documentation describes the available interface approaches and resource permissions. Confirm the relevant documentation for your edition and release. An integration should receive the resources it needs, rather than broad administrator access for convenience.
Keep credentials outside application source, page content, and ordinary logs. Separate test and production access. Document rotation and revocation, including what happens when a developer or vendor no longer supports the integration.

Request Technical ConsultationPrevent duplicates and reconcile disagreement
When a request times out, the receiving system may still have processed it. Blindly retrying can create duplicate orders or repeated updates. Use stable transaction identifiers and a documented deduplication rule where supported. Record acknowledgements without placing unnecessary personal information in logs.
A reconciliation process should identify records that have not arrived, statuses that disagree, and work that needs human attention. Decide whether a scheduled comparison, event history, or operator queue is appropriate for the actual volume and business risk.
Agree on acceptance before launch
- Normal, invalid, repeated, and delayed transactions have expected outcomes.
- Mappings cover the actual product types, customer rules, taxes, and fulfillment cases in scope.
- Operators can identify and recover a failed handoff.
- Monitoring, credentials, recurring costs, and support ownership are documented.
- Deployment and rollback are tested without disrupting real orders.
A successful test request does not establish production capacity. Start with representative scenarios, verify the records on both sides, and make the remaining limitations explicit.
